Sumbawa Traditional Cigarette (Jontal Cigarette)

Sumbawa known as it sustainable tradition and the people’s activity that kept since first kingdom that inherited till now, modernization seems like such a way to remove people tradition but there is not what  happen to Sumbawa, it called as “ngudit” means smoking in Sumbawa language.

The cigar itself made from palm leaves drawstring till clean from its fur on the bottom side than put a pinch of tobaccos by bent and folded it. The native use it because at that time the real smoke that used to smokes by colonial are too expensive and the solution is made by palm leaves that provided and easy to get.

The most delicious palm leaves for smokes (ngudit/Sumbawa language means smoking) are made from young leaves of palm are dried. Initially cleared palm from smooth fur on the bottom of the leaf, then cut it into 20 cm as width as three adults finger.  Each piece is folded in half than bent it to fill some tobaccos on it. Crease and then rolled, and the cigarette are ready to smoke.

The tradition is hereditary from the ancestor and use to find on many villages (old man) bby sitting on their own houses (bale panggung) by drawstring the palm leaf, folded and bent to put some tobaccos on it. The smokes Itself called as ”roko’ jontal” Sumbawa language mean a palm leaves cigar. Provide by nature and available in any season that easy to get. The pack use to put off the tobaccos is called “baka”
